Cold Water, Land, and Small Boat
Safety and Survival Course Objectives and Content
This summer program was designed for high school students who may spend time on or near bodies of cold water.  It is an opportunity for them to learn what to do to remain safe around cold water as well as how to survive if and when they are in an emergency situation in the water.


GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVE
The cold water, land, and small boat safety and survival course seeks to teach students how to be safe and survive emergency situations in cold water.  Students will become well-versed in the use of safety and rescue equipment, learn small boat safety, and land survival upon getting to shore after a cold water immersion.

COURSE CONTENT:
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1.   demonstrate basic cold water safety and survival skills
2.   demonstrate emergency procedures for recreational boaters
3.   demonstrate shore survival for children and/or adults.
4.   be able to use various PFDs and immersion suits
5.   deploy and use liferafts
6.   demonstrate techniques necessary for sea survival
7.   demonstrate the use and decoding of distress signals
8.   demonstrate the treatment of hypothermia
9.   discuss hypothermia prevention
10. use fire fighting equipment on watercraft
11. discuss "abandon ship" procedures
12. verbalize and demonstrate water search and rescues
13. demonstrate how to maintain vessel stability
14. demonstrate on-board emergency drills
15. demonstrate risk assessment
16. demonstrate land survival techniques such as:
--shelter construction
--maintaining warmth
--building fires
--use of survival items
--basic first aid
--signaling for help
--map and compass reading
