The Writing Journeys portion of Wilderness Education began as a thought several years ago when I started teaching Language Arts in the classroom during the school year. It quickly became evident to me that most students are weak in their writing skills--not only in expository writing, but also creative writing. Whether we like it or not, writing skills are a major part in the success or failure in college and the working environment. This being the case, we have developed a curriculum
that teaches students to do everything from develop paragraphs to write research papers.
Why are we teaching the class in the Alaska Wilderness??
We are trying to get students away from the classroom in order for them to sit back, relax, and get the "imaginative juices" flowing. We want to get kids to focus 24/7 on clearing their heads of all the "clutter" that goes on from day to day and let the
wilderness "inspire" them in their writing.
Thoreau seemed to write better for it--so
why not your kids?
