W10.3 - Demonstrates basic skills of writing a research paper (picks a topic, identifies three subtopics, paraphrases notes from at least three sources, writes an outline (traditional outline, concept map, columns of subtopics with notes, etc.), writes rough draft from outline, writes final draft with title page and bibliography).
W10.5 - Writes biographical or autobiographical narratives or short stories that: relates a sequence of events and communicate the significance to the audience; locates scenes and incidents in specific places; paces the presentation of the action to accommodate mood changes, makes effective use of descriptions, perspective and sensory details; and describes using sensory details, specific actions, feelings and interior monologues.
W10.6 - Writes responses to literature that: demonstrates a comprehensive grasp of the significant ideas; supports important ideas and viewpoints through detailed references, demonstrates an awareness of the author’s use of stylistic devices, and identifies and assesses the impact of the author’s intent.
W10.7 - Writes persuasive compositions that: structure ideas and arguments in a sustained and logical manner; use a specific rhetorical device; clarifies and defends positions with relevant evidence, expert testimony , expressions of common belief and logical reasoning; addresses reader’s concerns or biases.

Develops key ideas within a composition through supportive evidence (scenarios, definitions, commonly held beliefs, new sources, speeches, oral history, field studies, and interviews). Integrates quotations and citations into written text, while maintaining the flow of ideas. Organization: Writes coherent essays that include a thesis statement, supporting evidence, and a conclusion. Writes well developed paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting evidence presented in a sequential order. Voice: Displays ability to write with a consistent tone that is appropriate for specialized prompts (reports, persuasive essays, scientific reports). Word choice: Writes to engage the reader using fresh and vivid vocabulary. Sentence Fluency: Demonstrates ability to exert control over pace of composition using sentence structure and lengths. Conventions: Writes correctly using more complex grammar principles (footnotes, endnotes, bibliography, and in-text citations) and accurate spelling after self editing with the use of a dictionary.
W11.7 - Writes reflective compositions that explore the significance of personal experiences, events, conditions or concerns using rhetorical strategies (narration, description, exposition, persuasion) and draws comparisons between specific incidents and broader themes about life.
